Producing UI Standards and Tools

All mature companies learn the value of consistency of visual language and design patterns. More importantly, they understand the need to generate code libraries to simplify adoption of these common standards.

Jim has directed his UX teams to define User Experience Standards and code libraries for websites, desktop applications, and browser-based applications. His teams have defined rules for:

  • visual treatment and branding, including a detailed icon language
  • design patterns
  • application elements (such as buttons and menubars)
  • application behavior
  • repeatable workflows and contextually based interaction models
  • online help

The team also described how to evaluate conformance to the standards, provide roadmaps, code libraries, versioning, documentation about how to use and apply standards, and an adoption, governance, and evolution model.
